4WD WHEEL DRIVE ADVENTURES

Exploring the Black Hills

There was a time that you could use the fire roads in Custer State Parks to explore in your 4WD. We discovered and old CCC camp from the 1930's.

Indian Cave State Park, Nebraska

After Indian Cave became a park, but before it was developed, the were many section roads and old farms that could be investigated.

We got stuck and took most of the day to get out. We were 10 miles to the nearest paved road.

I tried to drive it out.

It didn't work!

Winch ?

I had a hand cranked winch, but broke a tooth on one of the gears. It took a while to find a way to make it work.

Stuck!

Fred Anderson and his CJ-5

Fred and I were exploring somewhere above Boulder, Col.

Stuck

I found a set of Formula PCV's that worked great in the sand, but were worthless in the snow.

First gear - low range

Fred said, "they could have used a little finer gravel."

4WD Trail

This really was a road.

There were some wet areas and we took them one at a time.

Missouri River sand dunes.

Me trying to get my FJ-55 airborn. For a while there was a sand dune area open to 4WDs near North Souix City, SD.

We would drop the tire pressure to about 5psi and could go anywhere in the sand.

Flying CJ

The jeep was a much better flyer than the Land Cruiser.

CJ

Take off - landing came soon after.

CJ-5 taking a bath

It turns out that the CJ is a better flyer than it is a swimmer. This photo was published in one of the 4WD magazines.

Back road near Omaha

Engineers call this fat clay. It is slippery and could get you stuck in 2 inches of mud.

Would you like to buy a CJ

People who have never done this, can't know how much fun it is.

Snowy Range, Wyoming

I was by myself and scared to death my FJ-40 would tilt a little too much.
